Gardening your Slopes & HIllsides

We are so happy to host Diane Emmerson at Little Bird Gardens for a class on Native Plants and best practices for gardening a sloping landscape. Slopes can be tricky when planting due to soil run off, erosion, and drainage issues. Diane will walk us through why certain plants do and don’t work on a slope or hilly landscape and why native is almost always the best way to go. She will share how and when to plant and most importantly how to keep costs down. This class is especially designed for Little Bird Garden Geeks and is a gift to our gardening community.

If you have a slope you want to garden or are just interested in learning more about planting techniques from a true veteran gardener. Sign up to save your space today. Space is limited.

Benefits & Beauty of Native Plants –with Diane Emmerson

Diane has been an avid gardener since she was a teenager, and subscribed to Organic Gardening Magazine when she was 15. When she had her own home in Minnesota, she learned from every possible source, and one of the things she did was rescue native plants from construction sites. More recently, she has come to learn the native plants of the Pacific Northwest, after moving to Vashon and seeing all the native plants on her husband’s property on Vashon. Reading Doug Tallamy’s book Bringing Nature Home, Diane realized the critical importance of native plants in our landscapes, and started a nursery specializing in native plants.

Diane has over 40 years green gardening in Washington state, Minnesota, Iowa, New Zealand, and France. She was president of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, and introduced a community gardening program to the state, called Minnesota Green.
